Tributes have been paid to the former football player Modeste M'Bami, after club side Paris Saint Germain (PSG) published news on Saturday (7 January) that the 40-year-old had died of a heart attack.

The Cameroon international midfielder won Olympic gold at the Sydney 2000 Games, scoring the 'golden goal' in the final to secure the title.

He won the Coupe de France title twice with PSG, and had spells with French sides Marseille, Sedan, and Le Havre. M'Bami also played for teams in Spain, Colombia, and his native Cameroon, before retiring from the sport in 2016.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was among those to pay tribute, posting on Instagram: "Such Sad News, RIP Modeste Mbami".

Former teammate George Elokobi also took to social media to share condolences for 'a good roommate'.

While club colleague Juan Pablo Sorin remembered M'bami's "special way of brightening up the locker room" and "quality and strength on the field".
