Team Canada won the rhythmic gymnastics team title at Birmingham 2022 on Thursday (4 August) with a score of 272.950.
Australia claimed silver (268.650), and Team England, who had competed earlier in the day and were watching from the stands, bagged bronze (267.050).
Three gymnasts competed for each nation on each of the four pieces of apparatus – the hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon – with 10 scores out of the 12 counting toward the total.
'Ready or not, here I come,' was the song lyric from the first routine of the night from Cyprus' Anna Sokolova. Ready or not indeed, she started proceedings with a score of 28.800, the second highest qualifier on the apparatus heading into the final.
Other stand-out routines include Australia's Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva with the ball, the law student who won bronze at Gold Coast 2018 in this discipline, scored 29.100, topping the apparatus standings and helping Australia toward that team silver.
Canada's Carmel Kallemaa had the highest score of the day with a super trooper Abba number scoring 29.700 with the clubs.
The first day of three for the rhythmic gymnasts at the Arena Birmingham also saw qualifications for the individual all-around, which takes place on Friday, with the apparatus finalists, who will compete on Saturday, also decided.
The top 16 ranked gymnasts go through to the all-around final – with a maximum of two gymnasts per country – and the top eight ranked gymnasts on each piece qualify for apparatus finals. There are no carry over scores so all gymnasts start from zero. They go again.
