Only one team could make history tonight as the first ever men’s lacrosse team to win World Games gold and it was Canada who claimed their place in the record books. The opposition? Their great rivals in world sport, the United States, who they beat 23-9 in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday (12 July).

The last thing the US team would have wanted was to lose on home turf to their neighbours but the writing was on the wall from the first two minutes when Canada's rookie goalie, Brett Dobson, saved three goals in the first two minutes. To add insult to injury, Canada made the most of the turnover and went up to the other end to score each time. By the end of the first quarter it was 6-1 to the visitors.

The second quarter went very much the same way with Canada rampant. By halfway, they were 14-5 to the good, and the US side had some thinking to do.

By the third quarter, Canada had stormed into a 20-8 lead and just could not be stopped. By match end, Canada had scored a phenomenal 23 goals from 28 shots on target, truly a dominant performance.

Bronze-medal match

Earlier in the day, Japan took on Great Britain to face off for the bronze medal in a tense match that went to over-time, with the Asian side scoring the sudden-death goal that took them 19-18 ahead to grab the last spot on the podium.

Helmets, gloves and sticks flew in the air as Japan celebrated wildly. The Brits, conversely, slumped to the turf in defeat, but it really was the game of lacrosse that was the winner here.

So the men’s tournament has come to a close, but the women’s competition has only just started. Running through to Saturday 16 July, there's plenty more frenetic action to look forward to on the field of play.
