Here’s who and how to watch at the second Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Series event of the year coming to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where B-Boys and B-Girls can earn ranking points towards Olympic qualification.

The new Olympic sport of breaking will finally make a Games debut at Paris 2024. But first, the B-Boys and B-Girls have to qualify.

Their journey continues in Rio de Janeiro this weekend. The Carioca Arena in the Olympic Park of the Brazilian city will see the top athletes bringing their best moves to the dance floor on 14th and 15th April 2023 as part of the Breaking for Gold World Series.

It's the second Breaking for Gold World Series event of the year, after the first one held in Kitakyushu, Japan. They're crucial stepping-stones for the athletes. They can earn ranking points that count towards the Breaking for Gold rankings, of which the top 14 in each gender advance to next year's Olympic Qualifier Series with Paris 2024 berths on offer.

Top B-Boys and B-Girls competing at Breaking for Gold Rio 2023

None of the big names in breaking want to miss the event in Rio, where we will see the best B-Boys and B-Girls battling for gold.

In the men’s side, B-Boy Amir of Kazakhstan will be defending the title he won in Kitakyushu. Always a fan favourite, Japan’s B-Boy Shigekix will be one of the main rivals to for the crown. The 2022 world champ Phil Wizard of Canada, the man of many talents B-Boy Lussy Sky (Ukraine), or the B-Boy and lawyer Xak (Spain) will be other athletes competing in Brazil.

Liu Qing Yi, aka B-Girl 671, wants to keep up her hot streak after reaching the top of the podium in Japan and a second place at the 2022 World Championships. Japan’s B-Girl Ami, her rival in the final in both events, wants to take the revenge.

European champ B-Girl India (Netherlands), Belgium’s B-Girl MadMax, or B-Girl Anti of Italy will be other ones to watch in the women’s contest.

Following the conclusion of the Rio event, the next Breaking for Gold World Series will take place 17th and 18th of May in France.
