Sun Jiaqi claimed victory in the women’s BMX freestyle final at Madrid Urban Sports on Saturday (17 June).

After falling on her first run, the 19-year-old - who was second to four-time world champion Hannah Roberts in the World Cup opener in Saudi Arabia - landed a one-footed X-up and achieved a big tabletop air off the quarter-pipe as she scored 87.33 points.

That was much the best run of the day as the People's Republic of China swept the podium with valuable Olympic qualification points at stake.

Zheng Qian was second with 75.67, just ahead of Deng Yawen (75.00).

Zhou Huimin, who beat Roberts to take a first World Cup win in Montpellier last month, was fifth with a score of 71.00.

Colombia's World Championship finalist Queensaray Villegas, the only non-Chinese rider and the oldest competitor at 20, finished down in eighth place.

This is the third in-person Madrid Urban Sports festival - the 2020 edition was a virtual event - comprising music, art and competitions in several sports including skateboarding and breaking, both of which will feature at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The men’s BMX freestyle final takes place on Sunday and you can watch the entire event live on Olympics.com via Olympic Channel.
