With every winter sport on the current Olympic programme set to be contested in the Republic of Korea, biathlon is one of the most demanding due to its combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.

From 20 to 24 January, the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, will host six biathlon events with 200 athletes - 100 per gender - competing.

Biathlon format at Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympics

There are six events being contested at Gangwon 2024, the same as at Lausanne 2020:

Men’s events:

  • 5km Sprint
  • 12.5km Individual

Women’s events:

  • 6km Sprint
  • 10km Individual

Mixed events:

  • Mixed Relay 4x6km (W+M)
  • Single Mixed Relay 6km (W) + 7.5km (M)

In the individual event, the most traditional format, men ski 12.5km and women 10km. There are four rounds of shooting alternating between prone and standing position. If a target is missed, one minute is added to the overall time.

In the sprint, men ski 7.5km and women 6km. There are two rounds of shooting, the first in prone position and the second standing. A missed target means having to ski a 150m penalty loop.

Four athletes per nation compete in the mixed relay in the following order: woman-woman-man-man, skiing 6km each with each athlete shooting twice. Again, there is a 150m penalty loop for each missed target.

Two athletes per nation (one man, one woman) compete in the single mixed relay, skiing and shooting twice each. Women ski 6km and men 7.5km. Once more, missed targets result in penalty loops.
