It may have gone down to the wire with their final game of the group against Canada but co-hosts Australia have booked their place in the final 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
Results elsewhere meant their convincing 4-0 thumping over the reigning Olympic gold medalists saw them qualify top of their group, setting up a last-16 clash against Denmark.
They opened their World Cup football account with a narrow 1-0 victory against tournament debutantes the Republic of Ireland, courtesy of a Steph Catley penalty.
Nigeria provided their second test of the tournament, in one of the most entertaining games of the group stage.
Australia took the lead through Emily van Egmond, but their joy was short-lived when Uchenna Kanu equalised on the stroke of half-time. Osinachi Ohale put the Super Falcons ahead before Asisat Oshoala struck to make it three.
Alanna Kennedy headed home in the closing stages to set up a grandstand finale, but it ultimately wasn’t meant to be.
Their must-win game against Canada resulted in the Matildas’ best performance to date, putting four past them. Hayley Raso’s double was followed by Mary Fowler’s first of the tournament, and Steph Catley’s stoppage-time penalty.
Monday’s opponents, Denmark, finished second in their respective group behind European Champions England.
The Danes opened their World Cup account with a narrow 1-0 victory over the People’s Republic of China, thanks to Amalie Vangsgaard’s 89th-minute winner.
That was followed up by an equally narrow defeat at the hands of England, with Lauren James’ sixth-minute strike the difference maker.
Denmark’s safe passage to the knockout rounds was subsequently secured with a 2-0 victory over debutantes Haiti, with captain Pernille Harder opening the score from the spot before Sanne Troelsgaard’s late effort sealed the victory.
