The men’s 400m hurdles final promises to be an edge-of-the-seat affair when the likes of reigning world champion Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin take to the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday.

World No.1 Warholm clocked his personal best of 46.70s in the first race of the season in Oslo in July, to sink Kevin Young’s 29-year-old world record. Norway’s Warholm is a two-time world champion and will be a favourite to claim the gold.

The long-standing Olympics record of 46.78 was set by USA’s Kevin Young at Barcelona 1992.

USA’s Rai Benjamin, third fastest man in history, will be hoping to live up to his world No. 2 billing. Son of former West Indies cricketer Winston Benjamin, Rai Benjamin, too, clocked his personal best of 46.83s during the US Olympics trials in June this year.

If 2019 Doha world championship silver medalist Benjamin manages to win on Tuesday, it will be a sweet redemption for him. Warholm had claimed the 400m hurdles gold in Qatar.

Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba, world No. 5 and world championship bronze medalist, will be another top contender for the podium with a personal best of 46.98.

Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, current world No. 3, and Turkey’s Yasmani Copello, Rio 2016 bronze medalist and world No. 6, will also be on the starting blocks.

Meanwhile, Indian hurdler MP Jabir exited in the heats with 50.77s, finishing 33rd out of 36 overall.
