Malaysia's top star Lee Zi iJia roared back from a game down to defeat his Thai opponent in three, and will face Prannoy H.S. in last eight in Hangzhou. Ng Tze Yong received advice from Lee Chong Wei.
Lee Zii Jia and Ng Tze Yong made it a happy day for Malaysia as both shuttlers reached the quarter-finals at the Asian Games 2023.
Just hours after Lee came from from behind to knock out men's badminton world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn on Wednesday (4 October), Ng followed suit by beating Kantaphon Wangcharoen (Thailand) 21-17, 21-12 to set up a meeting with Japan's Naraoka Kodai in the round of the last 8.
25-year-old Lee got a much needed boost for his confidence by upsetting the No. 3 seed from Thailand 10-21, 21-19, 21-6 in 57 minutes.
He will will next face India's Prannoy H.S., who earlier defeated Dmitriy Panarin 21-12, 21-13.
Ng confirmed after his match that he got advice from Malaysian legend Lee Chong Wei.
"Yes, Chong Wei did call me," Ng told reporters. "However, I think I should keep his advice to myself and not make it public."
