Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and world champion, will spearhead a 68-member Indian athletics contingent at the Asian Games 2023, which is scheduled in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.
The athletics events at the 2023 Asian Games are scheduled to start on September 29 and end on October 5. The Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium will host the competitions. Events can be seen live in India.
A total of 655 Indian athletes will be competing for medals across 39 different sports in Hangzhou. The 68-member squad for athletics - 35 men and 33 women - is India’s largest contingent for any sport.
Barring Neeraj Chopra, who is also the reigning Asian Games champion having won the gold medal in the javelin throw at Jakarta 2018, steeplechaser Avinash Sable, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian record holder and defending Asian Games shot put champion and ace hurdler Jyothi Yarraji will be some of the other top names to look out for in the Indian squad.
A strong jumps contingent -- Murali Sreeshankar and Jeswin Aldrin in the men’s long jump, Shaili Singh in women’s long jump, men’s triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker -- will also be in the fray.
Swapna Barman and Jinson Johnson, the reigning champions in the heptathlon and men’s 1500m, respectively, will also be in Hangzhou to defend their Jakarta crowns.
The Indian mixed and women’s 4x400m relay teams will also enter the competition as defending Asian Games champions while hopes will be high from the men’s relay team, which clocked an Asian record at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest.
