Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2019 | As it happened: Podium training day 1

The Olympic Channel are at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany, bringing you all the latest news, videos, and updates.

While the Championships don't officially begin until 4 October, podium training started on 30 September as athletes had their first official chance to practice on the competition apparatus at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle. China, with their All-Around star Chen Yile, were in action and we saw Chen nail a triple full dismount off beam.

10:20 pm – Goodnight from Stuttgart!

The crews are hard at work getting the arena ready for tomorrow's second day of women's podium training, including Team USA and Simone Biles.

We'll be here tomorrow morning as Biles holds a press conference at 11 am German time.

10:10 pm – Chen says training "still not perfect"

We've just spoken to Chen Yile in the mixed zone.

She comes across as a perfectionist. Asked about how she felt about today's session, she told us: "I thought it was all right, but it's still not perfect."

Asked about her form after returning to international competition for the first time since last year's Worlds, she said: "I think my form's quite good, I just have to be ruthless during competition."

9:15 pm – Chen Yile lands triple full dismount

8:30 pm – De Jesus dos Santos reflects on 'good' podium training

We've just heard from Melanie de Jesus dos Santos in the mixed zone as she reflected on what she described as a 'beau podium'.

"I felt very good," she said. "The room is very good, it's a beautiful podium training."

8:00 pm – China are up

We've moved on to the next – and last of the night – subdivision, which includes Canada and China.

All eyes on Chen Yile, our All-Around series star.

China are starting on vault, then moving to uneven bars, beam, and finishing on the floor. Stick with us here and on our Twitter page as we hope to bring you a live stream of their beam practice later this evening.

7:45 pm – The prize on offer

These are what the gymnasts are aiming for this week… the official 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships medals.

7:10 pm – Strong... until the end on bars

De Jesus dos Santos looked incredibly sharp during her practise on the uneven bars. During her full routine, she executed an in-bar stalder Tkatchev to Pak. She followed that up with a Maloney to a Bhardwaj. It was going extremely well, until the very end as she sat down her full-twisting double layout dismount.

No worries, though, she got back right up and nailed it a few minutes later. She is definitely a contender for the final on this event.

6:23 pm – Rotation

We've just finished the first rotations in that subdivision. France were on floor.

5:50 pm – Flashy introductions

The lights have been dimmed in the arena as women's subdivision 5, which includes France and Romania, are introduced.

This is, of course, also a trial run for the announcers and organisers ahead of the first sessions open to the public.

Those will come tomorrow, as Team USA's podium training is open to attend for 10 euros. The same applies for Russia and Germany men's podium training on Wednesday.

5:30 pm – Mustafina on motherhood and Tokyo 2020

Russia's Aliya Mustafina isn't here in Stuttgart. The new mother is currently injured and thus not here with her team, which includes All-Around star Angelina Melnikova.

She's been speaking to the Olympic Channel about what being a mother means to her, and why she still wants to compete next year at Tokyo 2020.

It's also her birthday today – so from us, Happy Birthday, Aliya!

2:45 pm – Watch Chusovitina's vault

2:04 pm – Great vaulting from Chusovitina

The 2008 Olympic silver medallist on vault just performed a very clean and powerful (though with a spot from the coach) Rudi on vault. Can the 44-year-old reach the vault podium at the World Championships for the first time since 2011? In training, her second vault appears to be a Kasamatsu full. Impressive!

She is looking for a berth to her eighth Olympic Games and has multiple paths to earning that spot at Tokyo 2020 in Stuttgart. One option is to make the vault final and finish among the top three athletes from countries not already qualified to the Games.

1:53 pm – Derwael: Different kind of pressure

Nina Derwael says there is a different kind of pressure on her here this year coming in as defending world champion on the uneven bars.

"I think even last year there was a little bit of pressure on me because I was like double European champion also won bronze in Montreal," she said.

"It's of course it's different when you're defending your title. I think it's just the pressure I put on myself."

1:30 pm – Chusovitina not tumbling

We'll bring you Derwael's reaction to podium training very shortly but back in the arena all eyes are on the next sub-division, which also contains seven-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina.

She started on the floor and ran through her routine without tumbling. She's up on vault, her signature event, next.

12:40 pm – Waiting to hear from Derwael

Derwael, who was the 2019 European Games champion on the balance beam, is done with her podium training with her final rotation on the beam. We'll hear from her in the mixed zone shortly, so stay tuned.

It's time for the third rotation of the sub-division, and it means it's Belgium's turn on uneven bars.

We'll get our first up-close look at reigning world champ Derwael on this apparatus.

11:33 am – Toni Ann Williams on comeback trail

Toni Ann Williams, Rio 2016 Olympian and University of California Berkeley star, is here in Stuttgart just seven months after an operation on an Achilles tear.

She vaulted a Yurchenko full in the first rotation this morning, and told us that she plans to perform all-around in Stuttgart including floor routine with a double layout and full-twisting double back.

Last night, we brought you coverage as Team USA practiced in the training hall ahead of the start of official podium training (they are scheduled to go in the competition arena tomorrow).

11:00 am – We're underway!

Good morning from Stuttgart where it's time for podium training, the athletes' first chance to practice on the official competition apparatus.

Among those in action this morning is the defending world champion on the uneven bars, Nina Derwael.

Each sub-division has 27 minutes per rotation.

Later tonight, France, Romania, China, and Canada all take to the arena for their first routines on the equipment.
