South Africans have traditionally played a pivotal role in the success of some of the teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its launch in 2008.
Heading into its 17th season, cricket’s richest league attracts some of the global superstars of the game from big-hitting batters to the most lethal bowlers.
Ranked among the top-six teams in the world in all three formats of the game, it is no wonder South African players are a mainstay in the IPL.
Eleven South African players have been retained ahead of the IPL auction that will take place on 19 December. Some of the star players that have been retained include former South African captain Faf du Plessis, who has been playing in the IPL since 2012. Du Plessis plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore with Indian icon Virat Kohli.
South African wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock has called time on his international career in Test cricket and the fifty-over format after the recent Cricket World Cup in India. De Kock was in blistering form in India where he scored four centuries and amassed a total of 594 runs over the tournament.
De Kock is likely to still feature for South Africa at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States. Good form for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL could be decisive for his nation ahead of the World Cup.
Other South Africans who are expected to make their mark in the 2024 IPL are the dynamic trio of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and Marco Jansen playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. They played a central role in the Proteas reaching the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
