Indonesia's Jonatan Christie was the biggest name to fall on day two of badminton's All England Open.
The number two seed was comprehensively outplayed by Weng Hongyang of the People's Republic of China, going down 21-6, 21-11 on Wednesday night (15 March) in Birmingham.
Christie never got going in the first game and, after he threatened a comeback in the second, the Chinese left-hander - ranked 27 in the world - stepped up again to seal a comfortable victory.
Malaysia's 2021 All England champion Lee Zii Jia kicked off proceedings, beating Thailand's Sitthikom Thamasin 21-12, 21-15 in just over half an hour.
The match of the day saw former world number one and 2019 winner Momota Kento beaten 23-21, 21-15 by young Thai sensation Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Shi Yuqi, the 2018 victor from the People's Republic of China, eased through 21-16, 21-11 against Japan's Tsuneyama Kanta
Reigning women's champion Yamaguchi Akane was in a hurry in her first-round match against Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt, winning 21-9, 21-10 in exactly 30 minutes.
Chinese Taipei's three-time winner Tai Tzu Ying cruised through her opener, beating Kim Ga-eun of the Republic of Korea 21-10, 21-12.
Korea's number two seed An Se-young also won in routine fashion, defeating Chinese Taipei's Wen Chi Hsu 21-10, 21-12.
Rio 2016 Olympic champion and 2015 All England winner Carolina Marin was pushed hard by Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour, but the Spaniard eventually prevailed 21-19, 21-17.
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu failed to progress, going down 21-17, 21-11 to Zhang Yiman of China in 39 minutes.
The Indian star was always up against it against the world number 17, and Zhang pulled clear in the second game to reach the last 16 where she will meet compatriot He Bingjiao who overcame a slow start to beat American Iris Wang.
There was a shock in the men's doubles as Malaysia's world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik went down 21-13 in the third to Indonesia's Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin.
