It was the playoff match-up nearly everyone was hoping for. Now it's finally here.

Beginning this Sunday (29 September), the top-seeded New York Liberty will take No.4 seed Las Vegas Aces in the 2024 WNBA playoff semi-finals.

The best-of-five series comes less than 12 months since the two last met in the 2023 WNBA Finals where the Aces emerged victorious, defeating the Liberty 3-1 for their second-consecutive title crown.

But that was then and this is now, and much has changed.

For one, the Las Vegas Aces arrive off the back of a topsy-turvy regular season. A sluggish start saw the league champs drop 13 games in all, including three to New York. And while unanimous MVP A'ja Wilson ultimately did enough to help steer the ship from even choppier waters, the Aces looked more patchy than perfect en route to the fourth seed.

Their nine wins from 10 ahead of the postseason, as well as their strong first-round showing against Seattle Storm, will no doubt be buoying their spirits but they know that the obstacle they must overcome if they are to achieve their 'three-peat' won't be easy.

The Liberty, strong already last year, have gotten bigger and better in every sense.

Finishing with the best record of the regular season (32-8), they will have home-court advantage on this occasion in addition to their in-form stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu. They will also undoubtedly cherish their regular season record against the Aces as they hunt the Liberty's first-ever WNBA title.

With Olympic gold medallists Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum also set to suit up for the clash, this series will be one fans won't want to miss.
