After a record-breaking season in the WNBA, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces was named the league’s MVP on Sunday, 22 September. She became the second woman ever to win the award by unanimous vote, joining Cynthia Cooper, who won the unanimous MVP in the league’s first year, 1997.
Wilson broke the WNBA’s scoring and rebounding records this season and was the league’s top scorer, averaging 26.9 points per game, the highest per-game average in WNBA history. Earlier this summer, she also won the MVP of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 women’s basketball tournament after leading Team USA to their unprecedented eighth straight gold medal.
Now, she will try to lead the Aces to their third consecutive WNBA title, a feat that hasn’t been done since Cooper and the Houston Comets won the WNBA championship in 97-99.
