Janja Garnbret of Slovenia claimed the women's boulder gold medal Saturday (5 August 2023) at the 2023 IFSC Sport Climbing World Championships in Bern, Switzerland.
The Tokyo 2020 combined Olympic champion, Garnbret took the title with ease, needing only one attempt in each of the four boulders, ahead of Oriane Bertone of France. Team USA's Brooke Raboutou was the bronze medallist.
"It's hard to put into words what I'm feeling right now. This year was tough from the injury, from not knowing whether I come back or not," Garnbret said afterward. "So it was pretty tough. Today was not about actually proving people wrong but proving my people who were with me every single day right, that everything is ok and that, that I'm back."
For Garnbret, it was a seventh World title, having previously claimed gold in 2016 (lead); 2018 (bouldering, combined); and 2019 (lead, bouldering, combined).
"I'm training like I've never achieved anything before in my life," said Garnbret. "So probably I will never get used to stepping on the podium, stepping on the first place and celebrating because the field is so strong and it's getting stronger year-by-year. The girls are pushing me to do better, so I'm trying to keep up with them."
