With his iconic curly blonde hair, John "John John" Florence perfectly fits the stereotypical image of a laid-back surfer. But underneath lies a formidable and hardened competitor in the world of surfing.
Florence grew up in Hawaii with the iconic Pipeline, one of the world's premier surfing breaks, practically in his backyard. He was introduced to surfing by his mother Alex - an ardent surfer herself - as soon as he could walk.
With a natural affinity for the ocean, Florence quickly transitioned from the shores to amateur competitions where he picked up strings of awards. His talents were on full display at 13 when he entered the Triple Crown of Surfing, becoming the youngest surfer in the history of the event.
In 2011, he made it to the sport's premier competition, the World Surf League Championship Tour (CT). Having narrowly missed out on the title in 2013, he finally achieved his goal in 2016 before retaining his world crown the following year.
