Using its cutting-edge Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones, the Official Smartphone and Computing Equipment partner of the Olympic Games will help stream the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony on the River Seine and the Olympic sailing competitions through a private 5G network, powered by Orange, the official mobile network provider for Paris 2024 in France.

To support this, Orange will install antennas along the Seine to establish the first-ever standalone 5G network in France. This innovative collaboration is aimed at providing a new, first-of-its-kind viewing experience for fans worldwide through seamless 5G connectivity.

“In an increasingly connected society, Samsung Galaxy mobile technology has helped deepen and transform users’ relationships with the world, wherever they are. Having been a Worldwide Partner for nearly three decades, we know first-hand how important it is to create and enable the same meaningful connections at the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Stephanie Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Marketing of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re honoured to be working closely with the IOC and OBS to provide high-quality footage that will be part of a series of firsts at Paris 2024, and bring fans at home and on site even closer to the excitement.”

“A truly original perspective”

To bring fans closer to the action during the Opening Ceremony, which will see the athletes travel down the River Seine on designated boats for each national delegation, Samsung will install more than 200 Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones on the bow and sides of each of the 85 athlete vessels. The footage captured and shared using Samsung smartphones will provide an intimate view of the athletes' reactions during this historic event, the first Olympic Games Opening Ceremony to take place outside a stadium.

Samsung will also deploy the same technology for the Olympic sailing competitions in Marseille by installing a Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone on selected competition boats, allowing fans to experience the thrill of the race up close, and truly immerse themselves in the action.

As host broadcaster of the Olympic Games, we’re incredibly excited about this partnership with Samsung, which will allow a truly original perspective of Paris 2024, evolving the way in which fans experience the Games. Samsung’s latest mobile innovation will allow millions of fans around the world to live and breathe the spirit, action and emotion of the Opening Ceremony and sailing competitions alongside their favourite athletes in real time.

Extending Samsung’s legacy of Olympic Games innovations

By harnessing its advanced mobile technology and 5G connectivity to provide a closer view of the Games for fans around the world, Samsung will help Paris 2024 deliver on its promise to stage open and accessible Games for all, while also furthering the company’s legacy of Olympic innovations.

These are part of Samsung’s longstanding commitment to drive digital transformation and deliver cutting-edge technology at the Games, in close collaboration with the IOC.

These efforts originated with the “Call Home” programme at the Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998, which allowed nearly 2,500 athletes to speak to their families back home for free, when access to mobile phones was still limited, and continued with the Wireless Olympic Works (WOW) app – the first official Olympic information service on mobile – which was introduced at the Olympic Games Athens 2004.
