IOC defines evaluation criteria for French Alps 2030 programme

The IOC Executive Board (EB) has today approved a key step in shaping the programme for the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030.

French Alps 2030

Building on the evaluation criteria that were developed for the LA28 Olympic sports programme, the guidelines have now been adapted for winter sports, reflecting the Olympic Charter and the recommendations of Olympic Agenda 2020+5. They will still focus on:

  • Prioritising a reduction in the cost and complexity of hosting the Games.
  • Engaging the best athletes and sports that put athlete health and safety first.
  • Recognising global appeal to fans across the world, and host country interest.
  • Prioritising gender equality and youth relevance to engage new fans and athletes.
  • Upholding integrity and fairness to support clean sports.
  • Supporting environmental sustainability to foster long-term sustainability.

Following the recommendation of the Olympic Programme Commission (OPC), a discipline programme review will take place in 2025 to evaluate the disciplines to be included in the 2030 Olympic Winter Games. The evaluation criteria will ensure a comprehensive and objective assessment.

This process will assess the existing disciplines on the Olympic Winter Games programme, together with any potential proposed new additions.

Beyond the seven sports on the initial sports programme that were approved at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris this year, the host Organising Committee (OCOG) has the opportunity to propose additional sports for inclusion in the programme. The same evaluation criteria, where relevant, will be used to assess any sports proposed by the OCOG.

A key priority for the IOC is fostering sustainable Games by identifying efficiencies and reducing complexity in the sports programme. The IOC will collaborate with the International Federations and the OCOG to optimise the implementation of the programme, ensuring streamlined and sustainable Olympic Winter Games 2030.

The final decision on the discipline programme will be taken by the IOC EB in late 2025, and a decision on any sports proposed by the OCOG will be made by the IOC Session.
