Paris 2024 and its partners have decided to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games a responsible event in economic, social and environmental terms. That’s why Paris 2024 joined forces with trade unions and employer organisations by signing a social charter together on 19 June 2019. A first for a major sporting event, this initiative guarantees a responsible and sustainable approach to the Games.
Paris 2024 Social Charter, 1919‑2019: The Beginning is a film featuring everyone working towards the charter’s 16 commitments, which aim to promote decent working conditions, encourage occupational integration of vulnerable groups, and ensure that companies and representatives from the Social and Solidarity Economy can access project contracts.
The film also highlights the historic connection between the Olympic movement and the International Labour Organization.
Working towards three main aims
While the preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games are guided by 16 commitments, three main aims will shape the periods during and after the events:
Give all companies access to contracts, including very small, small, and medium‑sized businesses, companies from the Social and Solidarity Economy, as well as integration through economic activity and disability sectors. To create different and inclusive Games with stakeholders who genuinely represent France's economic fabric, Paris 2024's stated objective is to give 25 per cent of total contract value to these sectors. Paris 2024 signed a collaboration agreement with SOLIDEO, the Yunus Centre, and Les Canaux on 23 May 2018—an innovative collaboration that underlines Paris 2024's goal of organising the world’s first ever united and inclusive Games. A solidarity platform, ess2024.org, was created to help achieve this ambition. This platform aims to inform and support companies from the Social and Solidarity Economy that want to contribute to making the Games a success. A system for monitoring and coaching and a forum for networking, the platform bridges the gap between the regions of France, the Paris 2024 project, the booming world of social entrepreneurship and the circular economy, and is intended to continue operating well beyond 2024.
Contribute to the occupational integration of vulnerable groups, such as people who are in long‑term unemployment or who have disabilities. For example, Paris 2024 aims to set aside 10 per cent of the hours worked on future contracts for people in occupational integration.
Protect decent working conditions. Paris 2024 has committed to fight against illegal labour, anti‑competitive practices, and discrimination, and will monitor working conditions and limit unstable employment. The charter to promote local employment and community development for construction projects related to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the SOLIDEO charter for occupational integration adopted on 5 July 2018, set out the commitments of the Social Charter for contracts related to Olympic and Paralympic facilities awarded by SOLIDEO and all other project leaders and owners.
