The Test Events Programme
Before each edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the organisers test a certain number of the systems that they plan on implementing at the event itself. They do this to limit operational risks and ensure that the competitions take place smoothly. Tests very similar to what the general public will see in 2024 therefore take place at competition venues in the months leading up to the Games.
These tests are a sort of rehearsal that enable Paris 2024 to understand any adjustments that need to be made. Nevertheless, they are not simply identical versions of Games events, as the systems in place for any operations not undergoing testing may be very minimalist and a far cry from what we will see in summer 2024. For example, the Look of the Games will not make an appearance just yet.
THREE TYPES OF TESTS FOR PARIS 2024
Test events organised by Paris 2024
These tests are entirely organised by Paris 2024 and include certain features (events, number of athletes, medical and technological systems, etc.) like those of international competitions. This enables the organisers to review how the site operates under a configuration similar to that of the Games.
The sailing event to be held in July 2023 at the Marseille Marina competition venue will therefore bring together the best specialists from all over the world, with a competition programme much like that of the Games. This event will enable Paris 2024 to trial the sporting, medical and technological systems that will be applied at Marseille Marina the following year. Paris 2024 will also organise two other test events in 2023: an international triathlon and para triathlon competition from 17 to 20 August 2023, following the same routes along the Seine and on the road as at the Games, and an international mountain bike competition at Elancourt on 24 September 2023, also using the same track as the Games.
Events organised by national and international federations and third party entities
These events are directly organised by national and international federations or third party entities at competition venues that will be used for the Games in 2024. Paris 2024 may test certain systems planned for the Games during these events.
For example, the Vaires-sur-Marne nautical stadium will host the finals of the Canoe Slalom World Cup from 5 to 8 October 2023. This event will enable Paris 2024 to test their sporting and technical set-up at the pool at Vaires-sur-Marne, as well as a new format for the competition.
Operational tests
This testing category encompasses highly targeted tests carried out directly by Paris 2024, which may or may not require athletes to participate. The aim is, for example, to ensure that the venues function properly and can accommodate a smooth transition between each different sport practised there.
A number of the venues will undergo these tests, such as the Grand Palais (where a cover will be rolled out over part of the glass roof to test its impact on the competition area, and the transition from fencing to taekwondo will be trialled) and Bercy Arena (where the venue’s transition from gymnastics to basketball events will be trialled).
