Label terrain d'égalité

Paris 2024 is working to support gender equality

Paris 2024 established gender equality as a priority focus for its actions and one of its core values from the bid phase, working specifically to promote access to sport for women and girls, to combat discrimination and to prevent sexual and gender-based violence in sport or through sport. Paris 2024 aims to position itself as a key player for gender equality and is targeting a legacy of a more equal society for men and women following the Games.

Over the years, Paris 2024 has rolled out a number of initiatives to support this, and helped develop a label, issued by the French State, that recognises major national and international sports events - one-off or recurring - that commit to ensuring equality and combating all forms of sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination. Paris 2024 was awarded the Terrain d’égalité label in January 2024 subject to an audit during the Games.

Label issued by the French State and championed by Paris 2024

Convinced of the role of sport and the responsibility of sports organisations to promote gender equality, diversity and inclusion and combat all forms of sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination, Paris 2024 set out its commitment to the French State when this label was created.

The Terrain d’égalité label aims to recognise major international sports events that commit to promoting equality and combating all forms of sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination. Through the actions taken in connection with this label, organisers commit to:

  • being agents for change, making the event a welcoming, safe and trusted space for everyone.
  • putting in place virtuous dynamics during the preparation then the organisation of sports events in France, by targeting parity and diversity within the teams of employees and volunteers for instance.
  • being exemplary by putting in place prevention and reporting arrangements.
  • promoting these commitments and objectives nationally and internationally.

Paris 2024 achieved the Terrain d’égalité label in January 2024

To obtain the Terrain d’égalité label, they need to comply with a set of specifications based on around 20 criteria, such as building awareness among their teams of employees and volunteers on equality and non-discrimination issues, ensuring their sports event’s accessibility for all stakeholders irrespective of their gender identity, sexual orientation, origins or disabilities, promoting egalitarian, non-discriminatory communication that is free from any stereotypes, and even putting in place a dedicated unit to listen to employees and spectators and allow them to escalate any issues.

Paris 2024, alongside all the entities awarded this label, aims to continue working to support gender equality, while preventing and combating sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination in the sports events field. The rollout of this label is expected to help drive concrete progress with gender equality for the hosting and organisation of major sports events in France, while continuing to promote these causes at national and international level.
