The Indian compound archers booked their place in the women’s and mixed team finals at the World Archery Championships 2021 in Yankton, South Dakota, USA on Wednesday.

If either of the compound archery teams win their final match, it will be India’s first-ever gold medal at the world championships.

The women, led by Jyothi Surekha Vennam, knocked out last edition’s runners-up USA by a 226-225 margin in the semi-finals.

Seeded seventh after the ranking round on Tuesday, the women’s team of Jyothi, Muskan Kirar and Priya Gurjar defeated Denmark with ease in the top 16 and survived a shoot-off against Great Britain in the quarter-finals.

The Indian women came back from behind to equal Great Britain’s score of 230 and forced a shoot-off, which ended 30-28 in India’s favour.

Jyothi Vennam and Muskan Kirar were a part of the bronze-winning team from the previous world championship. They will face Colombia in the final on Friday.

The fifth-seeded mixed compound team, featuring Jyothi Vennam and Abhishek Verma, also cruised to the final after ousting Netherlands, South Korea and the team from Russian Archery Federation.

They will also take on Colombia for the gold medal.

The Indian compound men’s team, however, lost in the quarter-final.

Abhishek Verma, Sangampreet Bisla and Rishabh Yadav went down 235-238 to Austria in the top eight.

Earlier, the men had received a bye in the first round and defeated Italy 236-230 in the round of 16.

The recurve teams, meanwhile, had a challenging day.

While the men's and mixed teams lost in the round of 16, the women crashed out in the quarter-final.

All team finals will take place on Friday while the individual eliminations of both recurve and compound begin late on Thursday.
