Vincent Milou was a cut above the rest as he sailed through a men's open qualifier full of surprises at skateboarding's WST Dubai Street 2024 event on Wednesday (6 March).
The Frenchman punched his ticket to the quarter-final in emphatic fashion, taking the lead with his first run score of 72.22 before upgrading it to 73.12 beating second-place Deivid Tuesta by nearly nine points (64.92).
Olympic champion Horigome Yuto qualified for the next round in fifth place as the second Japanese skater with his countryman Netsuke Kairi taking third.
While there were cheers for some, the evening’s action was less complimentary for others.
Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Kelvin Hoefler was among a string of top-drawer names that failed to advance.
Also missing out are Team USA’s Chris Joslin and Braden Hoban; Brazilians Felipe Mota and Carlos Ribeiro, Japan's Sasaki Toa and Tokyo Olympians Manny Santiago and Micky Papa.
Those who made it out of open qualifying will join the three seeds in the quarter-final - Shirai Sora, Onodera Ginwoo and Gustavo Ribeiro.
Other pre-seeded skaters Nyjah Huston and Aurelien Giraud have opted out of competing in Dubai.
WST Dubai Street 2024, streaming live on Olympics.com and on the official Olympics mobile app from the semi-final stage, doubles as a Paris 2024 qualifier with crucial ranking points on the line.
