Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers failed to make the medal rounds in the three weight categories on the penultimate day. India ended the championships with two medals.
India’s run at the World Wrestling Championships 2021 came to an end after none of the Greco-Roman wrestlers made the medal rounds in Oslo, Norway on Saturday.
Indian wrestlers were in action in three Greco-Roman weight categories at the Jordal Amfi.
Former Asian champion Sunil Kumar lost 7-3 to Olympian Zakarias Berg of Sweden in the opening bout of the 87kg.
In the 63kg, India’s Neeraj lost 8-0 to Rio 2016 Olympian Ibragim Labazanov in the qualification round.
Gaurav Duhoon, meanwhile, beat Andreas Vetsch of Switzerland 4-0 in the opening round but lost 8-0 to Azerbaijan’s Hasrat Jafarov in the round of 16 in the 67kg division.
Nine Indian wrestlers competed in the Greco-Roman category. The 10 Indian wrestlers in the freestyle category also drew a blank earlier in the meet.
India, however, will return from the World Wrestling Championships 2021 with two medals. Tokyo Olympian Anshu Malik was the standout performer as she became the first Indian woman to make the final at the worlds.
The 22-year-old Anshu Malik won a silver medal in the women’s 57kg category while Sarita Mor clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 59kg weight division.
