With the likes of Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sonam Malik pulling out, India will field a young contingent at the Oslo world meet. Watch wrestling live!
The world wrestling championships 2021 will get underway in Oslo, Norway from October 2.
With six of the seven Indian wrestlers who participated at the Tokyo Olympics dropping out, the onus will be on young Anshu Malik to lead a very new-look squad at the meet that ends on October 10.
Tokyo bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, Sonam Malik, Deepak Punia and Seema Bisla are nursing injuries while Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who won the 57kg silver at the recently-concluded Summer Games, has pulled out due to lack of practice.
Women’s ace Vinesh Phogat, meanwhile, fell ill during the selection trials for the event and could not make the cut.
However, the event will also see the comeback of another Phogat sister.
Sangeeta Phogat, the youngest of the famed Phogat sisters and Bajrang Punia’s wife, returned to the mat after a long injury layoff during the trials and won the women’s 62kg spot for the worlds at the selection trials in August.
Rio 2016 bronze medallist Sakshi Malik was also vying for the same 62kg spot but couldn’t make the cut at the trials.
Satyawart Kadian, a former Commonwealth Games silver and Youth Olympics bronze medallist and husband of Sakshi Malik, Sarita Mor and Divya Kakran, both reigning and two-time Asian champions in their respective divisions, are the other big names in the Indian freestyle contingent.
The men’s contingent also features some exciting young prospects with Ravinder Dahiya, Yash Tushir and Gourav Baliyan – all medallists from August’s junior world championships making the team.
The Greco Roman contingent featuring the likes of Sandeep, Ravi and Naveen Kumar among others, will also have a point to prove at Oslo after no Greco Roman wrestler from India managed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. It led to the sacking of Georgian coach Temo Kasarashvili in June.
With as many as 25 Tokyo medallists (11 men’s freestyle, nine women’s freestyle and five Greco Roman), participating at the Oslo worlds, the young Indian contingent will have its work cut out at the event.
