A six-member Indian contingent will participate at the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Olympic Complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia starting from Monday.

Live streaming of the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 will be available in India on Olympics.com.

The Indian weightlifting team for the Riyadh meet includes Mirabai Chanu, Achinta Sheuli, Ajith Narayan, Bindyarani Devi, Gurdeep Singh and Shubham Tanaji Todkar.

However, Mirabai Chanu, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist and a 2017 world champion, will only attend the women’s 49kg weigh-in. The 29-year-old Indian weightlifter will not lift in order to protect herself from injury ahead of the Asian Games later this month.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2023 is one of two mandatory qualifying events for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Athletes must appear in Riyadh to stay eligible to obtain Olympic quotas for their respective national teams even if they don’t lift in the competition.

Meanwhile, athletes competing at the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 will have a shot at earning Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) points. The OQR points will be based on the best total results (snatch + clean and jerk) the athletes manage to lift in the competitions.

The top 10 athletes based on OQR, which will have one highest-ranked athlete per country in each weight category, will obtain Olympic quotas for their national teams after the qualification cycle ends in April 2024.

Commonwealth Games champion Achinta Sheuli and Ajith Narayan will compete in the men’s 73kg division. Shubham Tanaji Todkar will look to make a mark in the men’s 61kg category.

Bindyarani Devi, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist in women’s 55kg, will compete in the non-Olympic weight division. She had moved up to 59kg - an Olympic weight class - for the world championships last year.

CWG bronze winner Gurdeep Singh will also compete in the non-Olympic weight division of men’s +109kg.

The World Weightlifting Championships 2023 will conclude in Riyadh on September 17.
