With the thrills of the Paris 2024 triathlon competition still fresh in the memory, fans of the sport will be hoping the finals of the World Triathlon Championship Series can serve up the same type of drama that saw Great Britain’s Alex Yee and France’s Cassandre Beaugrand claim gold medals in France’s capital.
Both Yee and Beaugrand enter the last Series races of the season in pole position for the world titles. However, as the last two years have proved, anything can - and often will - happen in the season decider.
This year's finals take place in Torremolinos, Spain from 17-20 October (with the elite men's and women's finals taking place on the last two days) but the memories of the men’s 2023 decider in Abu Dhabi will loom large for anyone who thinks the championships have all but been decided.
In that race, Yee sat 57 points ahead of Paris 2024 silver medallist Hayden Wilde heading into the final. However, in a race filled to the brim with drama, France’s Dorian Coninx took a shock victory and with it an unexpected world title.
2022 saw a similar turnaround as Leo Bergere of France overtook both Wilde and Yee in the final race. Could the same happen again in Spain?
In this year’s women’s finale, Beaugrand will also be looking to cap a near-perfect season by adding the world title to her Olympic gold.
Along with Yee, the Frenchwoman is yet to taste defeat in the Series this year and will be hoping for no slip-ups in her quest for a winning end to a stellar season of racing.
However, Beaugrand will know that even the slightest dip in form could be the difference between a historic victory and a devastating defeat. There are no certainties in sport - and not least in the sport of triathlon, which has a history of springing surprises when everything is on the line.
Athletes to watch in the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Series Finals
Yee’s three ranking victories in the Series this season - including the Olympic race in Paris - have seen him installed as the odds-on favourite to take the world title. His closest rival is France’s 2022 champion Bergere who will need to overcome a deficit of over 400 points in the final race to win the championships. Wilde sits in third place, however, Yee will know that finishing anywhere within the top six will ensure he leaves Spain as this year’s world champion.
In the women’s race, Beaugrand’s closest challenger is Britain’s 2023 world champion, Beth Potter who won bronze at Paris 2024. The gap between the two is just over 100 points, with the outcome of this title decider hanging on a knife-edge.
Germany’s Lisa Tertsch sits just behind in third, while France’s Emma Lombardi and Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown each have an outside chance of victory as they enter this all-important race in fourth and fifth.
Who will be crowned world champions? All will be revealed on 19 and 20 October.
