Brazil's Kalani Konig emerged as a surprise leader after qualifying first in the men's park skateboarding semi-final at the World Skate Games Italia 2024 on Saturday (21 September).
Competing in heat one, the world number 41 put down a 91.12 score on his final run to rocket to the top of the leaderboard as the second batch of eight riders prepared to drop in. Ultimately, none of them were able to best his efforts, handing the 17-year-old pole position going into tomorrow's world championship final.
Konig was one of four Brazilians to advance to the final eight.
Reigning world silver medallist Luigi Cini finished in second place (90.05) with Olympic medallists Augusto Akio (87.50) and Pedro Barros (85.81) finishing in sixth and eighth respectively.
Cini, who took his world silver last year in the same skatepark hosting this event, looked notably comfortable as he cruised through the semis.
Local prospect Alessandro Mazzara (89.35) had the whole of Ostia buzzing as he qualified in third, just 0.18 points ahead of 13-year-old Egoitz Bijueska of Spain. Top qualifier Hampus Winberg, meanwhile, secured his spot in the final on his last run after early bails in his first two attempts. He ended the action in fifth place.
The park skateboarding action at the World Skate Games Italia 2024 will conclude tomorrow with the men's and women's finals.
They will be available to stream live on Olympic Channel via Olympics.com and the official Olympics app for mobile devices in selected territories. More information can be found below.
