Australia’s Torrie Lewis has great expectations from herself at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 in Lima, Peru which will be held between August 27 and 31.
The 19-year-old Torrie Lewis finished seventh in the women’s 200m semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics earlier this month. At the U20 World Championships, however, she has her sights set on a bigger prize.
“In Paris, I was one of the younger team members and I was just taking in the experience as it came,” Torrie Lewis said. “I feel like I know a little bit more of what to expect here and I have higher expectations from myself.
“I want a medal in the 200m, preferably gold, but I will also be happy with a personal best. For the relay team, we have a great group of girls and they’ve already broken the Australian junior record twice. This will be my first time running with them but I believe we can medal in that as well.”
At the U20 World Championships, Torrie will run in the women’s 200m and the women’s 4x100m relay events. She had also registered to compete in the 100m event but later pulled out.
Torrie has had a busy athletics season so far. She began her season at the Garry Brown Shield in Brisbane in January before making her Diamond League debut in Xiamen in April, where she stunned reigning 100m world champion Sha’Carri Richardson of the USA to clinch first place in 200m.
The 19-year-old helped the Australian 4x100m relay team qualify for Paris 2024 at the World Relays Championships 2024 in the Bahamas in May. Making her Summer Games debut in Paris, Torrie Lewis recorded a personal best of 22.89 seconds in women’s 200m heats before finishing seventh in the semi-finals.
Asked about her experience at Paris 2024, Torrie said, “The stadium was packed every day. Having that many people there made me more excited than nervous. The purple track in Paris was also a highlight for me. It was so different from anything I’ve ever run on.”
At Paris 2024, Torrie was also part of the Australian women’s 4x100m relay team. However, the team finished fourth in their heat and failed to qualify for the final.
