Sifan Hassan among World Athletics Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year 2024 nominees - How to vote
Three Olympic champions, three world record breakers, and multiple World Marathon Major winners have been long-listed in the Women's and Men's Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year categories. Find out who.
Three Paris 2024 Olympic champions and three world record breakers, including Sifan Hassan and Yomif Kejelcha, are among 10 athletics stars long-listed for the World Athletics Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year 2024 awards.
The 10 athletes include five women and five men, nine of whom are road runners and the other a race walker. The list includes four winners of World Marathon Majors in 2024.
They have been announced as nominees for the awards as part of a revamped voting procedure for the 2024 World Athletics Awards.
Two finalists in each category will progress to be considered for the overall World Athlete of the Year awards.
The long-listed athletes are, in alphabetical order by last name:
Women's Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year 2024 – nominees
- Sutume Asefa Kebede (ETH): Won the Tokyo Marathon in 2:15:55 in March – it is the second-fastest time in the world this year, behind only the world record.
- Ruth Chepngetich (KEN): Produced the first sub-2:10 marathon time by a woman in history earlier this month by winning the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:56, breaking the previous world record by nearly two full minutes.
- Sifan Hassan (NED): Ran in the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m races on the track in Paris, taking two bronzes, before making her Olympic marathon debut and breaking the Olympic record en route to gold.
- Tigist Ketema (ETH): Won the Berlin Marathon in 2:16:42, also claimed victory at the non-WMM Dubai Marathon.
- Agnes Jebet Ngetich (KEN): Set the fastest half-marathon time so far in 2024, on her debut over the distance, by winning the Valencia Half-Marathon yesterday (27 October) in 1:03:04 – the second-best time in history – in addition to equalling the road 5km world record in January at the Valencia 10k and breaking the road 10km world record in that same race.
Men's Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year 2024 – nominees
- Yomif Kejelcha (ETH): Broke the world half-marathon record yesterday, winning the Valencia Half in 57:30, in addition to holding the world lead in the road 10km.
- Jacob Kiplimo (UGA): Won the Valencia 10k in January before adding gold at the World Cross-Country Championships in Belgrade at the end of March.
- Benson Kipruto (KEN): Won the Tokyo Marathon in March in 2:02:16, which remains the 2024 world lead time, before taking marathon bronze at the Olympic Games.
- Brian Daniel Pintado (ECU): The only race walker on the list took individual Olympic gold in the men's 20km race walk in Paris, becoming the second man from his country (and first in 28 years) to claim that Olympic title. He also added silver in the new mixed marathon race walk relay event alongside Glenda Morejón.
- Tamirat Tola (ETH): Despite not originally being named to Ethiopia's Olympic team, managed to win Olympic marathon gold in a new Olympic record after being called up as a late injury replacement.
How to vote for World Athletics Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year
Fans can vote for their Women's and Men's Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year on World Athletics' social media pages, with each individual 'like' on Facebook or Instagram and each repost on X/Twitter counting as one vote.
Social media fan voting will count for 25 per cent of the result, with the World Athletics Council (50 per cent) and World Athletics Family (25 per cent) also voting over the next week from 28 October to 3 November.
The top two in each category from this round of voting will be considered finalists, with one final fan vote from 4 November to decide the overall Men's and Women's World Athlete of the Year award winners among the six total finalists in each category through the World Athletics Inside Track platform. Voting also took place for Field Athlete and Track Athlete of the Year categories.
Other awards that will be given out at the 2024 World Athletics Awards include the Male and Female Rising Star awards, a Coaching Achievement Award, Woman of the Year, Photograph of the Year, World Athletics Member Federation Award, and World Athletics President's Awards.
