World Athletics Championships 2022: All the medallists from Africa as Tobi Amusan and Ethiopia create history in track and field events

Five African nations won titles in Oregon and seven came away with medals.

There were 28 medals handed out to African nations at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

The world record performance of Nigeria's Tobi Amusan on her way to the 100m hurdles title was the ninth and final gold for Africa at the event in Eugene, Oregon.

Ethiopia finished second behind hosts USA in the medal table, with four gold medals in their total haul of 10 podium finishes. They won both marathon events with Gotytom Gebreslase triumphing in the women's 42.2km distance, and Tamirat Tola claiming the men's marathon. Mosinet Geremew also won marathon silver.

They also struck gold in the women's 5,000m on the track as Gudaf Tsegay won the title with compatriot Dawit Seyaum taking bronze. Tsegay also securerd a silver in the 1500m. And in the women's 10,000m Letesenbet Gidey triumphed as Kenya took silver and bronze. Werkuha Getachew was a silver medallist in the women's 3000m steeplechase with Mekides Abebe picking up the bronze there too, while Lamecha Girma was their other medallist, finishing second in the men's steeplechase.

Kenya also secured 10 medals, two of them gold. Emmanuel Korir was victorious in the men's 800m, while Faith Kipyegon won the women's 1500m title. Their other medallists were Jacob Krop (silver, men's 5000m), Stanley Mburu (silver, men's 10,000m) Conseslus Kipruto (bronze, men's 3000m steeplechase), Mary Moraa (bronze, women's 800m), Beatrice Chebet (silver, women's 5000m), Hellen Obiri (silver, women's 10,000m), Margaret Kipkemboi (bronze, women's 10,000m), Judith Korir (silver, women's marathon).

In total, five African nations won events at the Worlds.

Nigeria's Tobi Amusan stormed to the women's 100m sprint title, after setting a world record time in the semis. Nigeria's other medal was a silver for Ese Brume in the women's long jump.

Joshua Cheptegei was golden in the men's 10,000m to give Uganda their only gold. Jacob Kiplimo also took bronze in that race, while Oscar Chelimo won a bronze in the men's 5,000m to complete their haul.

Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali won the men's 3000m steeplechase for their only medal of the Worlds, in an event with an African sweep of the podium as Lamecha Girma from Ethiopia took silver and Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto bronze.

Other medallists from Africa at Oregon 2022

Burkina Faso had their best ever World Championship performance with Hugues Fabrice Zango collecting their first ever World silver medal, following his bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021.

Algeria were the other nation from the continent to win a medal, Djamel Sedjati finishing in the silver medal position of the men's 800m.

Globally, there were a total of 29 countries who won at least one gold medal, and 45 nations on the medals table following the 10 days of competition in the U.S..

Ethiopia third in inaugural World Team competition

For the first time, there was also a World Team competition awarded at the Oregon Track and Field worlds, with points awarded to nations for their final placings in events. Hosts United States of America (USA) came out top with 328 pts, ahead of Jamaica (JAM) with 110 pts.

Ethiopia (ETH) were the highest ranked African country in third on 106 pts, with Kenya just behind in fourth on 104 pts.
