The United States Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT) have hired Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach.
He replaces Gregg Berhalter, who was relieved of his role in July after the USA’s group-stage exit from the Copa America.
The appointment was announced following a 1-1 draw with New Zealand on Tuesday (10 September), in an international friendly.
Pochettino’s experience in club football saw him dubbed one of the most exciting coaches in the game, gaining traction during his year-long stint at Southampton in the English Premier League.
He spent five years with Tottenham Hotspur, before brief spells at Paris Saint-Germain in France, and most recently back in London at Chelsea.
“The decision to join US Soccer wasn’t just about football for me; it’s about the journey that this team and this country are on,” he said.
“The energy, the passion, and the hunger to achieve something truly historic here - those are the things that inspired me.
“I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together we’re going to build something special that the nation can be proud of.”
Pochettino will be tasked with leading his side at the 2026 World Cup, which the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico.
After a disappointing season at Chelsea, it is a big opportunity for the Argentine to get back to his best on the touchline.
His first game in charge will come next month, when the USA take on Panama on 12 October.
