The 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships are underway in San Jose, Calif., at the SAP Center.
The figure skating event returns to the site of the 2018 nationals, which determined Team USA for PyeongChang 2018.
Thursday (26 January) saw each of the pairs short program, ice dance rhythm dance and women's short program take place.
Fifteen-year-old Isabeau Levito is seeking her first title in women's singles, and leads after the short program, but by just 0.02 points over two-time winner Bradie Tennell, 73.76 to 73.78.
Reigning world champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier are out in front in pairs, scoring a national record 81.96 to lead by over 15 points.
In ice dance, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, three-time Olympians, had a strong start to their bid for an 11th consecutive podium at nationals, scoring 91.90 to put 10 points between then and the second-place duo. They're seeking a second win in a row and fourth national title overall.
