Preview: Lyon v Chelsea

Women’s football giants Lyon will be looking to add a record ninth Champions League to their collection as they come up against Chelsea who are yet to be crowned European Champions.

Chelsea were victorious in the first leg, winning 1-0 on away soil with a Guro Reiten goal - which was the first time that Lyon had lost in 19 home opening legs that they’ve played in the Champions League.

The current English champions head into this fixture off the back of a disappointing 2-0 loss in the WSL to Manchester City, whereas Lyon will be full of confidence having just won 6-0 in the French Division 1.

The winner of this fixture will face either Barcelona or Roma in the next round of the competition, on the 22/23 and 29/30 April.

Barcelona v Roma

Last year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League runners-up Barcelona come up against Roma, who they beat 1-0 in the first leg thanks to a Salma Paralluelo first-half goal.

Although Barcelona head into this fixture with the advantage, Roma made it clear in the first leg that they wouldn’t give up easily.

Coming close to scoring a handful of times towards the end of the first leg, the Serie A Women league leaders will be confident in their ability to put up a strong fight against Barcelona.

The two sides will come face to face at Camp Nou - a venue where Barcelona have won all four of their UEFA Women’s Champions League games over the last year.

Barcelona head into this fixture off the back of a 1-0 El Clasico which put them 13 points clear at the top of the Spanish league.

However, Roma had a rest weekend and will be ready to give the Spanish giants their biggest test on home soil yet.

The winner of this fixture will face either Chelsea or Lyon in the next round of the competition, on the 22/23 and 29/30 April.

Arsenal v Bayern Munich

Arsenal, with 15,000 tickets already sold, take on Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday 29th March.

The North London side suffered a narrow defeat in the first leg thanks to a first half Lea Schüller goal, who went on to be awarded Player of the Match for her winning goal and goal-line clearance to deny Arsenal’s Leah Williamson.

Despite the result, Arsenal will be confident they have the ability to overturn Bayern Munich on home soil, heading into the fixture off the back of a 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham in the WSL.

Bayern are also in fine form, having come out on top from a top of the table clash against Wolfsburg in the Frauen Bundesliga.

The winner of this fixture will face either Wolfsburg or PSG in the next round of the competition, on the 22/23 and 29/30 April.

Wolfsburg v PSG

Fellow Frauen Bundesliga side Wolfsburg come up against PSG this week, having secured a 1-0 away win in the first leg.

It was Dominique Janssen who made all the difference, converting a second-half penalty after PSG’s De Almeida received a second yellow card, and subsequently a red, for a handball in the area.

Just ten minutes before Janssen found the back of the net, PSG were also awarded a penalty for a Hegerin challenge - only for it to be ruled out once the referee had got a second look thanks to VAR.

Having secured a 1-0 win in the French League over Montpellier at the weekend, PSG will still feel confident enough to overturn their narrow deficit against Wolfsburg, who suffered a league defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Frauen Bundesliga.

Following her red card in the first leg, Elisa de Almeida will be suspended for the second fixture. Wolfsburg’s Lattwein and Popp are also both one card away from missing the first leg of the semi-final, should they qualify.

The winner of this fixture will face either Bayern Munich or Arsenal in the next round of the competition, on the 22/23 and 29/30 April.
