UEFA Euro 2024 (14 June – 14 July) has reached the quarter-final stage in Germany, with the final eight facing off on Friday 5 July and Saturday 6 July.

The European football festival is at the business end of the tournament and each team is closing in on the semi-finals and the final in Berlin on 14 July. The German capital will host the final quarter-final tie of the round, while Stuttgart, Hamburg and Düsseldorf will be the other three venues.

The opening quarter-final clash is between two of the favourites and best sides of the tournament, near flawless Spain and hosts Germany. Spain went behind to an own goal – their first goal conceded of the entire finals – in their round of 16 match against Georgia, but replied with a rampage by scoring three second-half goals to progress.

Luis de la Fuente’s side are aiming for a fourth Euros semi-final of the last five tournaments, but they will have to defeat a host nation growing from strength to strength. Germany want to keep their home victory hopes alive and are not afraid to adapt, though Spain will prove their toughest opponent yet in Stuttgart.

There will be a repeat of the Euro 2016 final in Hamburg between Portugal and France, with neither side yet to really set the tournament alight. Portugal had goalkeeper Diogo Costa to thank for saving three penalties in the shootout win over Slovenia, after Cristiano Ronaldo had missed a spot kick in extra time.

France also needed some good fortune to qualify, overcoming neighbours Belgium only thanks to an own goal in the 85th minute which saw them progress. Nonetheless, they have had a tough road to the quarter-final, having to get through a group containing Austria and Netherlands before facing Belgium and now Portugal.

In Düsseldorf, England take on Switzerland with one side looking to fulfil expectations and the other defying them for a shot at history.

England qualified in the most dramatic fashion; 1-0 down to Slovakia with 25 seconds of stoppage time to go, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham equalised with a spectacular overhead kick. Then, barely a minute into extra time, captain Harry Kane headed in from close range to turn it around and book their quarter-final slot.

Switzerland are finally reaping the fruit of their rewards, after they knocked out defending champions Italy to reach a second Euro quarter-final in a row. The Schweizer Nati have long fought to be lauded for their qualities and now have the chance to reach a first ever semi-final, a chance to rewrite the Swiss history books.

The final quarter-final will be between Netherlands and Türkiye, who will be` the last of the four semi-finalists determined. Netherlands just about qualified in third but look like a new team in the knockout stages, dispatching Romania 3-0 in comprehensive fashion to head into the final eight.

Türkiye seem to have fulfilled their potential and come together at the right moment, winning two out of three group games before an entertaining but even encounter with Austria saw the Turks prevail 2-1 to set up a superb clash with Netherlands.
