Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo finished 18th in the gruelling climb on the Alpe Cermis but did enough to claim a record-setting fourth Tour de Ski cross-country skiing title in Val di Fiemme, Italy on Sunday (5 December).

The final men's stage of the 2024-25 edition, a mass start 10km freestyle race, belonged to his Norwegian compatriot Simen Hegstad Krueger, who conquered the climb to finish nearly eight seconds ahead of the next skier.

Klaebo was among the front group over the first three-quarters of the race before the climb took its toll on the superstar.

Krueger would not be deterred as he edged his way higher and higher with Austria’s Mika Vermeulen keeping him company for most of the race.

The Norwegian pulled ahead as he crested the climb to race home for a comfortable victory in a time of 32 minutes, and 39.6 seconds (32:39.2).

Vermeulen followed nearly eight seconds behind him with Friedrich Moch of Germany taking third place in 32:50.3.

Klaebo did enough to secure the overall men's title, after winning four of the seven stages to match Dario Cologna’s record of four overall victories.

Therese Johaug completed a stunning return from retirement to win a record-equalling fourth Tour de Ski title.

The four-time Olympic champion confirmed her status as the queen of the mountain as she left a six-woman leading group behind with two-and-half kilometres to go.

Johaug extended her lead, putting daylight between her and the chasing group, as she raced home with a Norwegian flag in hand in a time of 33:23.9.

The 36-year-old crossed the line 25 seconds ahead of the second-placed Astrid Oeyre Slind with Heidi Weng following in third for a Norwegian 1-2-3.

Johaug finished 47 seconds ahead of Slind on the overall standings, with US star Jessie Diggins completing the podium, 2:41 adrift after finishing the final stage in sixth place.
