Tokyo Olympics sailing: India’s Vishnu Saravanan makes gains in laser standard class
The Indian sailor climbed to the 22nd spot in the laser standard class as Nethra Kumanan and the 49er pair of KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar struggled.
Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan climbed up two places on the third day of the laser standard competition to end the day in 22nd place at the Enoshima Yacht Harbor on Tuesday.
Resuming the day from the 24th position in the overall standings, the 22-year-old Vishnu competed in three races, including the one rescheduled from the previous day due to poor weather conditions.
Vishnu Saravanan finished 23rd in the fourth race, 22nd in the fifth and 12th in the sixth. He has collected 115 points so far.
A total of 35 dinghies are competing in the laser standard event at Tokyo 2020.
Meanwhile, Nethra Kumanan, India’s entry in the women’s laser radial class, continued her slide in the standings after another testing day in the waters.
The first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics, Nethra Kumanan was 28th in the standings at the start of the day. But a 32nd and a 38th place finish in the fifth and the sixth races, respectively, saw her slip to the 33rd position.
Top 10 sailors each after the 10 qualifying races in the men’s and women’s laser classes will qualify for the medal round.
On the opening day for the 49ers (two-person skiff boat), India’s KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar too endured a difficult day.
In the only race held on Tuesday, the Indian pair finished a lowly 18th among the 19th competing pairs.
The top 10 after 12 qualifying races will make it to the medal round at Tokyo 2020.
