Indian shooters Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela failed to make the cut for the women’s 10m air rifle finals at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
World No. 1 Elavenil Valarivan scored 626.5 with her 60 shots in the qualifying round to finish 16th in the 50-woman field. Apurvi Chandela’s score of 621.9, meanwhile, was only enough to secure her the 36th position. Only the top eight made it to the finals.
Norway’s Jeanette Hegg Duestad was the runaway leader in the qualifiers, topping the qualifying standings with 632.9. South Korea’s Park Heemoon (631.7) and USA’s Mary Tucker (631.4) placed second and third respectively.
ROC’s Anastasiia Galashina (628.5) was eighth.
Elavenil Valarivan made a slow start at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo, scoring 104.3 and 104.0 in series 1 and 2, respectively. However, an impressive 106.0 with her third series of 10 shots brought her right back in the fray.
However, the 21-year-old Elavenil couldn’t carry forward the momentum, scoring 104.2, 103.5 and 104.5 in her final three series.
Apurvi Chandela, meanwhile, suffered due to under-par scores in the second (102.5), fifth (102.2) and sixth (103.6) series.
