Indian archers Pravin Jadhav and Tarundeep Rai were knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics in the round of 32 of the men’s individual event on Wednesday.
Pravin Jadhav lost to reigning world champion Brady Ellison of the USA while Tarundeep Rai was ousted by Israel’s Itay Shanny at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field.
On a windy afternoon, the 25-year-old Pravin went down in straight sets to Brady Ellison, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist
The Indian lost a close opening set after an 8 left him one point behind (27-28) the current world champion.
In the second set, the Indian shot a low 7, which gave the American a chance to race ahead and win 27-26. Brady now led 4-0.
The third set was a forgetful one for Pravin. He shot only 23 as all his arrows ended in the red zone (8, 8, 7) while Brady added 26 points in his three attempts to register a comfortable 26-23 win and end the Indian’s Tokyo 2020 campaign.
Pravin had defeated world No. 2 Galsan Bazarzhapov of the ROC in straight sets (29-27, 28-28, 28-24) in the first eliminator.
Tarundeep Rai also knocked out
Earlier, three-time Olympian Tarundeep Rai also exited the Tokyo Olympics in the round of 32.
Tarundeep lost to Israel’s Itay Shanny in the second round after winning against Ukraine’s Oleksii Hunbin in the first.
The Indian was knocked out in an intense match against the Israeli that ended in a shoot-off.
Tarundeep was on the back foot in the opening set after Itay shot a 28 in return to the Indian’s 24 to take a 2-0 lead.
The second set, however, saw an improved effort from Tarundeep as he pipped the Israeli by one point (27-26) to equal the scores at 2-2.
The Indian had to share the spoils with the Israeli in the third, with both archers shooting 27 in their three arrows. The scoreboard read 3-3.
The next two sets were extremely close and were decided by a single point. Tarundeep managed to win the fourth (28-27), but the Israeli came back to take the fifth (27-28) and tie the score at 5-5, forcing a shoot-off.
In the one arrow shoot-off, Tarundeep scored a 9 but a perfect 10 from Itay meant the Indian’s run at Tokyo 2020 came to an end with a 6-5 loss.
In the close first elimination round, Tarundeep had come back from behind to defeat Ukraine’s Oleksii Hunbin 6-4.
