With Neeraj Chopra securing a historic gold medal with an effort of 87.58m in the Javelin throw on Saturday evening, India have registered their best-ever Olympic tally at Tokyo 2020.

Neeraj's stunning effort was Independent India's first-ever medal in Olympics and it was the country's seventh medal at Tokyo 2020.

Earlier on Saturday, wrestler Bajrang Punia had won bronze in the men's 65kg freestyle event. Fellow wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya had won silver in the 57kg event on Friday. That was after the Indian men's hockey team won bronze. Earlier, Badminton star PV Sindhu won the bronze medal play-off against He Bing Jiao in the women's singles event.

Welterweight boxer Lovlina Borgohain also won a bronze after reaching the semifinals where she was defeated by Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli on Wednesday.

Weight-lifter Mirabai Chanu had won a silver medal in the women's 49kg category to kick things off for the country.

As India celebrated its seventh medal, Tokyo 2020 has proven to be most successful Olympic campaign ever. Interestingly, India had won only two medals at Rio 2016.

London 2012 was India's most successful Olympic prior to Tokyo.

How many medals did India win at London 2012?

India won six medals at Rio 2016 - two silver and four bronze medals.

Viay Kumar won a silver in men's 25m rapid fire pistol before Sushil Kumar emulated the feat in men's 66kg freestyle wrestling.

Badminton star Saina Nehwal, shooter Gagan Narang (men's 10m air rifle), wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt (men's freestyle 60kg) and boxer Mary Kom (women's flyweight) were India's bronze medal winners.

And India have topped that tally at Tokyo.
