It all came down to the final length.
After 1450m where you couldn't call a winner, the USA's Robert Finke - the cream of men's longer-distance swimming at this year's Games - turned things up a gear to win the 1500m freestyle gold at Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
The 10th gold for USA swimmers at this year's Olympics was - fittingly - one of the most exciting races, as Finke finished first in 14:39.65, followed home by silver medallist, Mykhailo Romanchuk in 14:40.66. Special mention must go to Florian Wellbrock of Germany, who led until the final 50m when Finke showed his class to take the win that makes him a double Olympic gold medallist.
After the gold medal, Finke spoke about the surprise he felt at winning two gold medals: "I came in not really expecting to get a medal or anything and came out of it with two golds so I am just going to do my best to process things, hang out with my family and teammates here," he said.
"We've still got a couple of (swimming) events so just going to be screaming my butt off for the team."
Wellbrock, meanwhile, was thrilled with the bronze medal he won: “It is amazing I am really happy, it was a hard comeback after the 800m (where WELLBROCK finished fourth). I am really happy with the bronze," he said.
“I am the world champion (in the men’s 1500m freestyle) from 2019. I was motivated to do a good race (in the 1500m) now and I am happy with the bronze. I now focus on the open water (marathon) swim and recover (in order) to have a good performance.”
