Biography

Excelling in both pool and open-water swimming events, Florian Wellbrock has set his sights on a bold dream for Paris 2024: to become the first man to claim Olympic gold in both environments.

The Paris Games will mark Wellbrock's second attempt at securing gold in both the pool and open water, seeking redemption after falling painstakingly short in Tokyo 2020. The Bremen native won the 10km Olympic gold medal but settled for bronze in the 1500m, mirroring Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli's feat of two medals in the disciplines, accomplished at London 2012.

"I think the different events are a good challenge for your mind and your body," he explained to Olympics.com ahead of Tokyo. "If you are a very accomplished swimmer in one distance event, it's good to challenge yourself wherever possible."

Florian Wellbrock: A record-breaking appetite

Defying expectations and setting records have always been Wellbrock's motto. His pursuit of success faced an initial setback at Rio 2016, where as an 18-year-old with high hopes in the 1500m event, he finished 32nd in the heats and exited the competition early.
