With a blend of youth and experience, the Indian badminton contingent competing at the Syed Modi International 2023 in Lucknow will look to make a mark on the home courts starting from Tuesday.

The Syed Modi India International, a BWF Super 300 event, is the top badminton event to be held in the country this year. Results will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics. All matches will be live streamed in India.

The Indian men’s contingent will be led by Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth. However, the two world championship medallists have been struggling for form recently. Youngsters Priyanshu Rajawat, Kiran George and Mithun Manjunath are also in the fray.

HS Prannoy, India’s top player in the badminton rankings at world No. 8, was the top seed in Lucknow initially but pulled out at the last minute. World No. 17 Lakshya Sen, who was seeded fourth, also withdrew.

PV Sindhu won’t be defending her women’s singles title at the Syed Modi India International badminton tournament after opting for protective rankings earlier this month. However, the likes of Unnati Hooda, the youngest Indian badminton player to win a BWF title, Malvika Bansod and former junior world No. 1 Tasnim Mir will be eager to impress.

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand, the Commonwealth Games bronze medallists, will be the top Indian pair in women’s doubles. Tanisha Crasto will team up with Ashwini Ponnappa in the women’s doubles and look to defend her mixed doubles crown alongside Dhruv Kapila. Crasto won the mixed doubles title with Ishaan Bhatnagar last year.

The Syed Modi International will be followed by back-to-back BWF Super 100 events in Guwahati and Odisha, respectively, in the first two weeks of December.
