Leon Marchand continued his astonishing year by breaking the men's 200 IM short course World Record at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup 2024 Singapore on Friday, 1 November.
Showing no signs of fatigue following his victory in the men’s 100m medley yesterday in which he clocked the second-fastest time ever, the Frenchman powered home in 1.48.88 to beat Ryan Lochte's previous best of 1:49.63 from 2012 and capture a first short course World Record.
Marchand's win means he now has eight World Cup titles to go with his four Olympic gold medals from Paris 2024.
“That was really exciting for me, because I was trying to do something that has never (been) done before,” he said after. “The crowd was going crazy, so it was really pushing me. ... That reminded me of Paris, the Olympics.”
But the excitement was far from over at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
Just one race later, USA's Regan Smith broke her women's 100m backstroke World Record.
The eight-time Olympic medalist clocked 54.27 to lower her time of 54.41 set last Friday at the World Cup in Incheon, South Korea.
Elsewhere, 27-year-old Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China, secured a third-consecutive World Cup title in the women’s 200m free thanks to her time of 1:51.80.
PR China's Qin Haiyang maintained his perfect 2024 World Cup record in the men’s 50m breast, while Kate Douglass of the U.S. soared to the wall first with a solid win in this women’s 50 fly, ripping a new American Record in the process.
The men's 100m free Olympic champion Pan Zhanle sealed victory in his favourite event with a slower-than-expected time of 46.09, ahead of Italy’s Thomas Ceccon in second with 46.25.
Finally, South African World Cup veteran Chad Le Clos wound back the years with a brilliant come-from-behind win in the men’s 200m fly, stopping the clock at 1:50.42 having been in third at the 150m mark. The 32-year-old now owns an astonishing 229 World Cup medals.
