Olympic champ Sarah Sjostrom becomes most successful European Championship swimmer as Kristof Milak retains 200m butterfly title in Rome

Tokyo gold medallist from Hungary wins third straight Men's 200m title as Sjoestrom added another major title in 50m for her 27th Euros medal.

Sarah Sjostrom set another record in the swimming pool on Tuesday (16 August).

The Swedish star won the women's 50m freestyle at the European Aquatics Championships, to move clear as the person with most medals in the history of the event.

It was her 15th continental gold, having already won the 50m butterfly earlier in the meet, taking Sjostrom to 27 European medals overall, one ahead of Alexander Popov.

The Swede is also an Olympic gold medallist.

Earlier, Kristof Milak won his third successive men's 200m butterfly European title with a dominant victory at the final in Rome.

The Hungarian, who won the same race at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021 also holds the world record time and two world titles at the distance.

Milak also won the event in 2018 and 2020. It's his third title at the 2022 edition after the men's 100m butterfly and the 4x200m freestyle.

Ukraine's Mykhailo Romanchuk won the men's 1500m freestyle title, ahead of Italy's home favourite and Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri.

There was an Italian winner in the men's 50m breaststroke, with Nicolo Martinenghi claiming the title in the absence of world record holder Adam Peaty.

Margherita Panziera also gave the home fans something to cheer about, winning the women's 100m backstroke.

Anastasya Gorbenko won the women's 200m IM representing Israel.
