Four Paris 2024 Olympic quotas will be up for grabs when Asia’s top sport climbers meet in Jakarta, for the IFSC Asian Qualifier 2023.
The Indonesian capital is well-known to the sport already, having hosted two IFSC World Cup stages in 2022 and 2023.
There will be plenty of world medallists and Olympians on show for the Asian Qualifier, including recently-crowned men’s Asian Games combined champion Anraku Sorato of Japan, and South Korean women’s star Seo Chaehyun.
Below, we take a closer look at the key climbers to watch out for, the schedule, and how to follow the action live on the Olympic Channel via. Olympics.com.
Anraku Sorato and Chaehyun Seo the headliners
In the men’s side of the boulder and lead draw, 2022 Asian Games men’s combined champion Anraku Sorato is registered to compete.
The 16-year-old Japanese climber is quickly becoming a star of the sport in 2023, having also won lead silver at the World Championships, as well as World Cup gold medals in lead and boulder.
But Anraku will have to be at his best in Jakarta to hold off the likes of Republic of Korea’s Lee Dohyun - who won silver at the Asian Games in Hangzhou - and Tokyo 2020 Olympian Pan Yufei of the People’s Republic of China.
South Korea's Seo Chaehyun will be the star attraction in the women’s boulder and lead.
This year, the 2021 lead world champion has shown great form to land Asian Games silver in the combined, as well as lead bronze at the World Championships.
Also keep an eye out for China’s Zhang Yuetong, who took combined bronze at the Asian Games.
