Shubhankar Sharma finishes 44th at Portugal Masters golf
The 24-year-old Indian golfer was inconsistent in the tournament. His best came on Day 2 but it was not enough.
Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma finished on par in the final round of the Portugal Masters to card an aggregate three-under 281. He ended the golf event at tied-44 on Sunday.
Sharma had made the weekend cut with a two-under 140 after a solid second round at the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura but couldn’t keep the momentum over the weekend. He carded one-under in the third round.
Starting the final round tied-40 at three-under, Sharma teed off from the front nine and got the ball rolling with a birdie but lost ground with bogeys in the second and seventh.
On the back nine, Sharma looked in good touch early on, bagging birdies on the 11th, 12th and 14th holes. However, consecutive bogeys on 16th and 17th meant Sharma would end the final round at even par 71.
Shubhankar Sharma's outing in Portugal was highlighted by a rare albatross he carded on the penultimate par-five hole of the opening day. An albatross is when a player aces a par-four hole or cards a two on a par-five.
It was the third albatross of his professional career after the ones he managed during the domestic PGTI Tour in 2014 and at the Memorial on the PGA Tour last year.
The Portugal Masters was only the second time Shubhankar Sharma had made the cut in his last seven outings.
George Coetzee takes the win
South Africa’s George Coetzee clinched his second title in as many weeks, carding an impressive 16-under 268. He edged out England’s Laurie Canter by two shots.
Coetzee, who won the Titleist Championship at Pretoria Country Club on the Sunshine Tour last week, started the final round with a one-shot advantage over the chasing pack and barely put a foot wrong.
He ended the fourth round with five-under 66 on the back of five birdies to clinch the Portugal Masters.
