In Shane O'Neill's last trick-laden run on Saturday (23 July), the Australian finished on top of the skateboard street podium for the first time in 18 seasons of competing at X Games. The 32-year-old's previous best was second at X Games Oslo 2016.
Vincent Milou, meanwhile, had made a huge jump from ninth to first in his third run and had stayed there ever since. The showstopping names of America's Nyjah Huston and Japan's Horigome Yuto were the two most likely to be vying to take top spot off the 25-year-old, but it was O'Neill's last run that overtook the Frenchman.
Horigome rounded out the podium with the bronze medal while an unusual error-strewn display from phenom Huston left him in fifth place.
Skateboard street best trick
In the men's skateboard street best trick final, it was a 1-2-3-4 for the USA, with Jamie Foy defending his title to win back-to-back gold medals. Huston claimed silver and Dashawn Jordan, bronze. Mark Suciu, a 29-year-old making his X Games debut, was the unlucky American who left without some hardware.
Brazil's Felipe Nunes claimed fifth place, the adaptive skateboarder brushing off frustration with an airline for losing his prosthetic legs – for more than a month – impacting his real life more so than competition, such as being unable to drive without them.
No matter, event time is different. A lifetime of using first a longboard then a skateboard to get around after losing his legs aged six while playing on train tracks, has given the 22-year-old the ability to compete against the very best in his sport.
