The 2022 world all-around champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil posted the highest score of the day on three of the four apparatus but chose not to compete on the floor exercise Friday (18 August) at the Brazilian Gymnastics Championships.
With Andrade out of the all-around running, Andreza de Lima leads the standings with 52.734. The Brazilian Championships wrap up on Sunday (20 August) with a second day of all-around competition.
The competition was the first of the year for Andrade, who last competed at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, England, where she became the first South American to win global all-around gymnastics gold.
In seasons past, Andrade, 24, has been plagued with injury, suffering season ending ACL tears in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Since her third tear four years ago, Andrade and her coach Francisco Porath have taken a cautious approach to her schedule, competing in floor exercise only when she needs to.
"I talk a lot with my coach and we trust in each other. We always try to be really safe, and do floor in the correct moments. He believes in me. I'm never going to lie to not do it," Andrade said after winning the World title in Liverpool. "So, when I really tell him that I can't do it, it's because I cannot and he always respects that.”
Friday, Andrade began competition on the vault, executing a clean double-twisting Yurchenko for a 14.467. Andrade's score was the highest single vault performed; however, because she did not perform two vaults, she is not included in the vault standings.
She followed up her vault with a near-perfect effort on the uneven bars, where she performed a Maloney, stalder full pirouette, piked Tkatchev, Pak salto opening sequence.
She earned a 9.000 execution score, giving her a 15.200 final score.
Andrade wrapped up her day on the balance beam where she scored a 13.867. Her routine on beam included a double pike dismount.
